to get fresh feta cheese weighed by the kilogram, told to keep it in salted water in the fridge,

Shopping at the Persian shop
picked up tinned tomato paste, robbe goje, (much thicker than regular tomato paste),
…
Stopped off at the halal pita shop for pistachio baklava, (as shown above),
declined to pick up pita bread or pide, the choice was pastries or bread, the pastry won, pide for next time,
…
Onto the Chinese supermarket,
picked up Korean-style toofu and fresh chilies,
…
Then to the regular supermarket
for bacon, butter and wine.
Variety is the spice of life!
Oh and by the way the baklava was delicious. Already gone. Coffee and baklava. Yumm. Planning my next outing already. Baklava, Turkish delight or something else. I tried something new today, a fruit jelly encased in roasted cashew nuts. No time for photos. Sorry. Not sure of the name of it. It was really good. I might just have to sample the other varieties next time and find out the name of them.

What a great food-shopping day! We don’t have all those cool ethnic shops where we live. One Middle Eastern grocery, two Asian shops, and that’s about it. Fortunately, we have an Earth Fare (kind of like Whole Foods or Fresh Market, but smaller) and a vegetarian co-op that sell a lot of foods from afar. I am so jealous of the Persian shop especially! I had a friend in college whose boyfriend’s parents were Iranian and ran a really great Persian restaurant, so she would bring food back to the dorm for me and it was heavenly….
Sounds like you have quite a variety of shops to visit yourself. I have a Persian recipe that I want to make, have to buy minced lamb next. The tomato paste was the special ingredient that I needed.
Now with internet shopping the choice is endless but actually visiting specialty shops is still a pleasure.
Agreed. It’s fun to browse the aisles for foods you’ve never tried or ingredients you’ve never cooked with. Plus, although there are some things that I order from online for convenience, I prefer to support small, local businesses when I can. 🙂
Absolutely about the small businesses. The internet has helped connect those in out of the way places more so than those in the big city, the impact is perhaps more profound. Good food, good company, and understanding.
