5 Maroon glasses sitting on a wall

What was different from yesterday? Why is today’s juice so sweet compared with yesterday’s one? How odd. I didn’t do anything differently. The taste is very sweet today. Perhaps it is body condition that makes a difference? Or too much watermelon?
I can’t be sure but I think I juiced a small green caterpillar. I saw one on the shiso leaves. I am sharing my food with caterpillars. Holes are appearing on the leaves. If there is one then there will be more.

101st post, juicing all the way, ah

Yesterday I did my 100th post so that would make today’s 101st. A milestone. I am getting the hang of blogging. I am getting the hang of juicing. I just re-remembered that there is a “Choose from most used tags” button and I don’t need to type everything in. So busy trying to remember that I forget to look closely!  Little steps.

I don’t really like zucchini/courgette in my juice I have decided. It will be a back up if I don’t have anything green. I like silverbeet a lot now. I understand now why people like to juice greens, it is much easier to eat in a juice rather than cooking. My shiso plant is shrinking. I keep cutting off branches for juicing. I need to plant more. I think I will be running out of it soon. Time to put some attention to my vegetable garden.

Today’s juice  is a better colour. Taste is top.

Silverbeet permane

Practically a repeat of yesterday’s juicing ingredients. I like it.
Silverbeet, shiso. kiwifruit, orange, cucumber, ginger, carrot, beetroot.
Again the colour would not make it to the juicing stands, unless it was in a hardcore vegan area of town. Brown does not make for a drink unless it’s beer. Or am I being silly.

I went to a mall yesterday and checked out the juice stand to see what they served. And they served mainly fruit juice combinations, smoothies and salad. I confirmed that juice is best served at home. I had a chickpea curry for lunch from the Indian fast food counter. I had hoped that they had samosa but they didn’t.

I would like to make a pile of samosa, bake them in the oven, freeze them and bring them out as snacks when I feel like something to eat. Falafels would be nice too. That could be a project to make bulk to freeze once a week. My fish balls have all gone. I need to fish some more to make some more.

Sliverbeet wins gold

Silverbeet was the star of the show today. I had a green juicing day today. I wanted to add more greens. Now the juice will not be winning any colour competitions but the taste was really smooth. The vegetables and fruit blended well. Everyone got along and there were no weird clashes. A good party.
Silverbeet is another name for chard or Swiss chard.

Shiso I So You So

Green shiso is the new ingredient in my juice today. I love it in juice. I was wondering if it would over power everything but no, it compliments. I planted both red and green shiso in a pot and I have been watering it regularly. The green shiso is winning the height race and is overcrowding the pot. I decided to prune it a little and help myself out at the same time.
A very nice start to the day!

Jumbo carrots are taking over

I would have thought my juice today would have come out pinkish in colour with all the watermelon but no it was orange. Jumbo carrots were the cause of this. Today’s juice came out a little too sweet. There was too much watermelon so I put some aside for tomorrow. I can completely relate to Goldilocks! Too bitter, too sweet, I want something just right! I think the fun of juicing is finding new combinations.
I try to juice about 800ml to make two big glasses. Watermelon bulks out the volume. I put the vegetable peelers in the dishwasher and didn’t have anything to peel with so I improvised with a zester on the zucchini. That’s why there are interesting stripes down the sides.
I bought some silverbeet and bok choi to add to juices this week. I want to add more greens. Less fruit. We shall see how the combinations go with each other.

Bitter sweet medicine

God, This had better be good for me. Today’s medicine was bitter. Does this balance out things for the sweet things I ate yesterday? You have a wicked sense of humour. I mean wicked as in evil or despicable rather than the modern take meaning awesome, I definitely do not want this being misinterpreted. And why did you make so much juice. I have an extra glass today. I won’t promise you anything because I know I’ll break it but I will try and eat less in the way of sweet things. And you can try, well you know already what I wanted to say. Yours, Throve.

Blaming God for my juicing wows. A low blow. I am drinking this as I type and, boy, I must be getting load of nutrients today. I can taste everything. Every mouthful is effort. I love the colour and that is what is letting me overlook the taste. Bitter and sweet is clashing. No more choi sum left. But I think it was the zucchini. Somebody own up please.

Choi Sum Juice

I was reading about juicing and realised that I had begun to omit the greens from my juicing. So today I have added not one but two green things. Choi sum, pictured on the left, is something new for me. I cut it in half to ease myself into greens.
Choi sum is photogenic. The juice came out cloudy but this isn’t obvious in the photo juiced. It tastes okay. There is a lingering slightly bitter after taste but it is complex with the hint of ginger and the lemon. Perhaps with one more carrot this would give a bigger base.
This juice combination needs an adjustment. After juicing watermelon this juice came up short on quantity.

You can’t pick up two melons with one hand

“You can’t pick up two melons with one hand” Persian proverb

I couldn’t even pick up one melon with one hand today. And then I didn’t want to squash anything else in the shopping trolley so I carried it the rest of the way. Then I did weight training as I waited at the checkouts. Just a few twists for fun. I only had one weird look. I had help today shopping at the fruit and vegetable place, so don’t imagine me juggling the trolley, my handbag, the watermelon and the change.

The cucumber with the watermelon has really thinned down the juice and the colour. I have purposely left out beetroot. Not because I don’t like, I love it but I just wanted a colour change. I bought more beetroot today so expect something magenta in the next few days. I think I should be adding leafy greens to my juice to make it “better.” Hey. I’m just glad that I am eating more fruit and vegetables.
I bought some Chinese greens today, Choy Sum, to add to my juicing for an experiment. We shall be doing a taste test.

Back to the proverb…What is your take on it?
Focus on the task at hand. Don’t get sidetracked?
You can’t do something well if you try and do two things at once.
That would rule out multitasking then perhaps? I never was very good at that.

Watermelon season has arrived

I just bought my first whole watermelon for the season and it is heavy. They are being sold per unit now rather than by weight. At last!
I peeled my lemon and kiwifruit for a change. Lauren asked me why I use a knife and I could only think of the photo angle for an answer. Peeling lemons has a benefit. The smell is lovely. Cutting a lemon with a knife does not give the same effect. Interesting.
That got me thinking about organic food and my what amounts to a virtual garden at the moment. I do have mint and shiso growing in pots and so that is progress. I am dragging my feet on this. However I did do some weeding briefly today. Excellent progress.
Beautiful colour today and I am enjoying the watermelon blending with the ginger and lemon. Watermelon gives volume. No greens today. More like a fruit juice today.
